Patricia Romano

Patricia Romano is a dancer, choreographer and dance teacher specialised in Indian Classical Dances.Graduated in Classical Ballet by the Royal Academy of Dancing of London in 1982, she has being a Professional dancer since the age of 17.Disciple of the renowned Indian Master, Shrimathi Kalamandalam Sumathi, under her guidance started in 1996 the first western branch of NATYALAYA School of Classical Dances, at São Paulo city, Brazil and since then dedicates herself only to Indian art and culture.Besides São Paulo branch, the Brazilian Natyalaya has 3 more branches, one at Brasília, Federal Capital, one at Curitiba, Paraná State and more recently, one in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State.  In 2006, she settled abroad the first Brazilian Natyalaya branch in Istanbul, Turkey.Patricia is specialized in 3 styles of South Indian Classical Dance: Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi and in these styles was the forerunner in Brazil.She was also the first one to establish a Classical Indian Dance Group in Brazil. In 1997 she started the group with her own students and nowadays the group is recognised, nationally and internationally, by its excellent technique in classical dance as well as by the beautiful innovations in contemporary items.Natyalaya Group is also recognised by keeping the essence of the Indian Cultural Traditions.

Some of her achievments

Considered an exponent of this art in Brazil, in 1998 she was honoured by the Indian Consulate in the Independence Celebration with a prize “because of her talent and contribution to spread the Indian Culture in Brazil”.In 2005 she received the prize “Comenda Swami Vivekananda” from the Indian Consulates of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro from Swami Nirmalatmananda, monk of Ramakrishna Vedanta.In 1999 she created a new style inside the Indian Dance, which was called “Masala Dance”. In spite of the style being modern, it was recognised by her own dance Guru, Shrimathi Kalamandalam Sumathi as “Classical” because its roots are deep connected with Natya Shastras, the Indian scriptures that rules the dance.More recently, she brought to Brazil the famous modern dance from the Indian Cinema known as Bollywood. The most important of the western Natyalaya is to establish the same patterns for teaching and learning of the Guru-shishya parampara (Master/disciple relationship) as for Patricia this is the main thing that keeps the Indian Culture going since a long time and in this way, making the Indian Culture known around the world.

Patricia travels to India every year to expand her knowledge as a dancer and also as a teacher. Besides being taught and trained by her own Guru, Shrimathi Kalamandalam Sumathi, Patricia has attended courses and workshops of:
  • Bharathanatyam with Malavika Sarukkai and Navtej Johar;
  • Kuchipudi with Shri Raja Reddy;
  • Kathak with Sunayana Hazarilal;

Letter from Ms. Vidula Sawant – President of Indian Association of – November, 14th, 2000

“...All the dances were beautifully performed by Iara Ananda Romano, Naira de Almeida Prado and Radha from Natyalaya School of São Paulo. These dancers enhanced the Natyalaya Kerala´s Celebration. They are students in the Brazilian branch of Kalamandalam Sumathi´s School.”

 Mathroo Bhoomi Journal (Kerala, India) – May, 29th, 2004

“...students of Patricia Romano, who are Kalamandalam Sumathi´s disciple, are visiting the Indian Natyalaya. Iara Ananda Romano is Patricia Romano’s daughter...these students have so much connection with the Indian Culture that this makes them very connected with Classical Indian Dance. Sumathi Teacher mentioned about their capacity to learn Classical Indian Dance, which is difficult even for Indians. When they sang the song ‘Svagathan Krishna’, they did it with such perfection that Indians were jealous. For someone who the mother language is Portuguese, they sang not only the lyrics but the difficult ‘jatis’ of Classical music.”

Mathroo Bhoomi Journal (Kerala, Índia) – May, 23rd, 2004

“...there I found a person who made me very impressed, Shri Patricia Romano... Graduated in Classical Ballet in the Royal Academy of Dancing of London she dedicates her life to the Classical Indian Dance. She studied Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi under the guidance of the very well known teacher, Kalamandalam Sumathi from Natyalaya and directs the Brazilian branch in São Paulo. When I visited her house I felt in Kerala...her students are most of them, Brazilians and they use to give many performances of Classical Indian Dance in Brazil and abroad...is still necessary that Kerala State recognise her for all good work she is doing.”
